Rev. Edward C. Middleton
DARLINGTON -- Rev. Edward Carl Middleton, age 84, passed away Monday, December 23, 2019. Funeral services will be held 12:30 p.m. Friday, December 27th at Bethea Baptist Church, with a graveside service at 2:00 p.m. at Florence National Cemetery, directed by Belk Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 11-12 p.m. Friday at Belk Funeral Home.He was born in Darlington County, South Carolina, the son of the late Audrey Carl and Fannie Campbell Middleton. A graduate of Timmonsville High school, he served four years in the U.S. Air Force, attaining the rank of staff sergeant. After leaving the Air Force, Rev. Middleton attended Mississippi College, graduating with the Bachelor of Arts degree in sociology. Ed and his wife Ann spent the following summer as student summer missionaries in Waukesha, Wisconsin. Rev. Middleton received the Master of Divinity degree in 1966 from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary in Wake Forest, NC. Rev. Middleton would pasture several churches prior to entering the U.S. Navy Chaplain Corps in 1968. While in the Navy, Chaplain Middleton served duty stations within California and South Carolina, finally retiring as Chaplain of the Naval Hospital in Beaufort, SC. Chaplain Middleton was appointed by Governor Richard Riley to the Governor's Task Force for Critical Human Needs and taught at Beaufort Technical College. Chaplain Middleton was awarded the Navy Commendation Medal, among other accolades. Chaplain Middleton stated he traveled around the world three times and touched the lives of over 100,000 men and women.After retirement from the Navy, Rev. Middleton pastured Faith Baptist Church in Hartsville, SC and later served as chaplain of Bethea Baptist Retirement Community in Darlington. Rev. Middleton was the second Solver Haired Legislator for Darlington County; a member of Darlington County Council on Aging; and Chaplain of the Civil Air Patrol Florence Composite Squadron for ten years. He was twice chosen as South Carolina Civil Air Patrol Chaplain of the Year. Chaplain Middleton was a volunteer Chaplain for many years for McLeod Regional Medical Center in Darlington, SC. A member of First Baptist Church in Darlington, Rev. Middleton was elected a Deacon, served as Men's Ministry Coordinator, and led the church basketball team, and was a member of Renny Johnson's Sunday school class. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Ann; his children, Beth Goodyear (Brett) of Surfside Beach, SC, Jerry Middleton of Florence, Susan Davis (Gary) of Clinton, and Wendy Chico (Leonardo) of New York City. Rev. Middleton was grandfather of ten children; Morgan Goodyear, Hayes Goodyear, Wyatt Middleton Goodyear, Leigh Ann Middleton, Tyler Middleton, Carson Edwards, Austin Gardner, Gray Gardener, and Gabrielle Gardner; brother, Donnie (Jan) of Florence. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Hubert and Herbert Middleton; sister, Sarah Middleton Smith, and brother-in-law, Harry Smith.
Reverend Dr. Richard Gardner
MCBEE -- The Reverend Dr. Richard J. Gardner, age 83, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, December 18, 2019 with his family by his side. A service of Worship to God and Thanksgiving for Dr. Gardner's life will be Friday, December 20, 2019 at 2:00 PM at Spring Branch Baptist Church by his pastor, Rev. Buddy Amerson and Dr. Wayne Williams with burial to follow in the McBee Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Thursday, December 19, 2019 at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home and other times at the home.Dr. Gardner was born November 8, 1936 in Hartsville, SC the son of the late Richard Jefferson and Catherine Lucas Gardner. A 1954 graduate of Bishopville High School, he went on to attain his Business Degree from Coker College and his Doctorate of Theology from International Theological Seminary. Dr. Gardner served in the South Carolina Army National Guard for 14 years achieving the rank of Captain, and was a faithful member of Spring Branch Baptist Church.In 1963, Dr. Gardner gave his heart to the Lord in salvation, and the following year surrendered to the call of God on his life to preach the gospel. He pastored many local churches in his early ministry before being led of God into full-time missions. In 1980, Dr. Gardner and his family accepted the call to serve as missionaries to the Commonwealth of Virginia. He faithfully served in that capacity until returning to Chesterfield County, SC in 1990 to accept the position of Executive Director of the Good Samaritan Colony in Ruby, SC where he would serve until his retirement in 2015.A man of faith and family, Dr. Gardner enjoyed serving the Lord alongside his family. He was blessed to have the distinct honor of baptizing each of his children and grandchildren, and officiating each of his children's wedding ceremonies. He was affectionately known to his family as "Daddy G" and will always be remembered for his love of helping others and his quick wit and humorous personality.A true outdoorsman, Dr. Gardner also enjoyed farming, gardening, and raising animals. He was an avid Clemson Tigers fan and enjoyed traveling with his family.In addition to his parents, Dr. Gardner was also preceded in death by a sister, Cappie Baskin; and brothers-in-law, Emsley Baskin and Gerald Stover.Survivors include his beloved wife of 54 years, Marie Gardner of the home; children, Cathy (Rev. Mark) Phillips, Michelle (Mitchell) Raynor both of Ruby, SC, Richard (Tammy) Gardner, Jr. of Lancaster, SC, and Tricia (Wendell) Parnell of Hartsville, SC; grandchildren, Kyle (Katherine) Phillips, Grace (Jayson) Steven, Anna Marie Raynor, Meghan Raynor, Jackson Raynor, James Gardner, and Emily Gardner; sister, Linda Stover of Columbia, SC; and nieces and nephews.The family would like to thank the staff of Regency SouthernCare Hospice of Chesterfield for their ministry, love, and support to Dr. Gardner and their family.Memorials may be made to Spring Branch Baptist Church, 5106 Middendorf Road, Hartsville, SC 29550 or to the Good Samaritan Colony, P.O. James Robert "Bert" Griggs III
HARTSVILLE -- James Robert "Bert" Griggs III, 37, of Mount Pleasant, SC, passed away on December 17th, 2019 at MUSC Hospital in Charleston.Bert was born on December 10, 1982, and was raised in the Byrdtown community in Hartsville, SC. Surrounded by a huge family and lifelong friends, he loved growing up in the country riding tractors and four-wheelers, being mischievous, as well as taking numerous family camping trips. Bert also loved spending countless hours playing alongside his sis (his original partner-in-crime) and never seemed to mind when she insisted on dressing him up as a doll baby. He went to Hartsville High School where he excelled in soccer and entertaining at the pond house. Bert later graduated from the College of Charleston with a B.S. in Business Administration. He remained in Charleston for four years after college working in all aspects of the hospitality industry while building meaningful, long-lasting friendships. It wasn't long before the mountains called his name and he headed to Jackson Hole to pursue his love of snowboarding. While there, Bert was the sales and marketing director of a hotel group that gave him the opportunity to travel to world-class ski resorts all over the country as an ambassador for Jackson Hole. He met his wife Lorrie while she was vacationing there and discovered they both had a love of traveling to see live music and a plethora of mutual friends. Following a whirlwind romance, they married on April Fools' Day atop the mountain. Together they created Drifter Merch, an apparel company dedicated to their love of music. Soon after, they returned to Charleston and a year later the light of their lives, Harper Grace, was born. Bert was an amazing father, husband, son, brother, and friend. Bert had an innate ability to make everyone he met feel like they were the most important person in the room. He never met a stranger. In fact, he was everyone's best friend. He had the sweetest soul and a tender heart that loved hard and loved deep. Bert had a unique sense of humor with an infectious laugh and smile that could light up the darkest room. He will be deeply missed.Bert is survived by wife, Lorrie Griggs; daughter, Harper Griggs; parents, Cindy and Bobby Griggs; sister, Leigh Cason (Lander); grandparents, Robert Griggs (Betty Sue); in-laws, Patsy and Bill Dixson; brother, in-law, Will Dixson (Susan); nieces, Griggs Cason and Mary Dixson, nephews Louie Cason and Liam Dixson, as well as numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.Bert was preceded in death by grandparents, Doris Griggs, Maysel Johnson, Calhoun Johnson, and his golden retriever, Dickey Betts.Visitation for friends and family will be held at Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home in Hartsville, SC on Friday, December 20th from 5-7 pm.
